Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

Music at Stanton Primary School is about engaging and inspiring children to enjoy listening and exploring a range of music. We aim to develop a life-long love of music that will enhance musical knowledge, skills and creativity as well as mental health and well being. All children have access to music and are actively encouraged to participate fully in lessons.

Implementation

At Stranton Primary School, music is taught in a fortnightly block once every term on a rolling programme. We teach it in this way to deepen children’s understanding and allow for retention of knowledge and skills.

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that children understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. It also aims to ensure that all pupils perform, listen to, play, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians. In Stranton Primary School we use the Charanga scheme. This involves completing musical units of work which enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. These dimensions are at the centre of all the learning; they are musical building blocks. This is an integrated approach to musical learning where games, the interrelated dimensions of music, singing and playing instruments are all linked (spiral of learning) enabling a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Music is also embedded within weekly assemblies of collective worship and through various termly performances to showcase children’s skills.

Impact

The National Curriculum for Music states that by the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. In Stranton Primary School all children build on their musical skills and understanding year on year, from singing nursery rhymes and action songs in Early Years, to moving on to develop their skills and understanding in KS1. In KS2 children progress further in their skills and knowledge of music by confidently accessing music through the ability to read and follow simple musical instruction whilst learning to broaden their skills to play various instruments to help develop and nurture a lifelong love of music.
