Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
The intent of the geography curriculum at Stranton Primary School is to ensure our children have a deep understanding of the local environment and the diverse surroundings in the wider world. The children will gain sound knowledge of human and physical characteristics from around the globe and will develop knowledge and skills which enables an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and environments around them. Our curriculum will inspire children to be curious about the world and the people in it, developing a sense of wonder about the world around them and the wider world. Children will have a greater understanding about the impacts on their life and environment. Observational questioning and investigative skills will develop through first hand experiences and high quality teaching, building on knowledge skills and interests. The scheme of work at Stranton Primary School will have clear sequencing and skills which will be relevant, interesting and purposeful.
Implementation
At Stranton Primary School, geography is taught in a fortnightly block once every term on a rolling programme. We teach it in this way to deepen children’s understanding and allow for retention of knowledge.
The progression of key knowledge has been taken from the Geography National Curriculum and mapped out accordingly. Objectives are progressive and sequential; teaching children first about their local area, Britain and then the wider world thus allowing children to develop a sense of size and distance whilst also providing children with a vast knowledge of the world in which they live. Furthermore, through our teaching of Geography, we will provide children with the skills and vocabulary to explore, wonder and become keen geographers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for all children in reception to have an ‘Understanding of the World; people and communities, the world and technology’ by the end of the academic year.Impact
Learners at Stranton Primary School, will develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes. They will also understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time. Our children will be able to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through fieldwork experiences that deepen their understanding of geographical processes. They will also interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs as well as communicate geographical information in a variety of ways. Children should retain prior knowledge and be able to make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning.
