Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Our Design and Technology curriculum at Stranton Primary School aims to ensure that the National Curriculum requirements around knowledge, understanding and skills, are fulfilled. All units of work will include an iterative design process allowing children to become increasingly confident in identifying real and relevant problems while critically evaluating products and then taking risks to be innovative when designing and creating their solutions. As part of the iterative process, time will also be given to reflect, evaluate and improve on their products. Further opportunities will be provided to study key events and individuals, who have helped shape the world, showing real impact and inspiring them to become the next generation of innovators.
Implementation
At Stranton Primary School, design and technology is taught in a fortnightly block once every term on a rolling programme. We teach it in this way to deepen children’s understanding and allow for retention of knowledge and skills.
The teaching and implementation of the DT curriculum at Stranton Primary school is based upon the National Curriculum. All lessons taught at Stranton Primary School will incorporate design and technology skills and understanding, through use of an iterative process. By revisiting and consolidating these skills, lessons can build on prior knowledge while incorporating new skills, knowledge and problems to solve. Lessons will also focus on the revision and introduction of key vocabulary. Throughout lessons, teachers will inspire children to develop a love of design and technology and see how it has helped shape the ever-evolving technological world we live in.
Impact
Our Design and Technology curriculum is planned to demonstrate clear progression. Thoughtful planning of progression enables children to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. All children will leave Stranton Primary School equipped with the skills to prepare and cook a meal as well as understanding the importance of a healthy and varied diet. Children will be able to apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to design and make products of increasing quality. They will also understand that designing and making is an iterative process and will develop the skills to evaluate and improve their products throughout and following a project. This will be evident through pupil voice, where children will confidently be able to talk about the skills and knowledge they have acquired and work will display the range of topics covered and clear cross-curricular links. At Stranton Primary School, we are aware that a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum offer makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture and well-being of every child now and in later life.
