Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
The aim of Computing teaching is to ensure children become digitally literate – able to safely use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in an ever-changing, digital world. We want children to learn computing in such a way that it alters their long term, computational thinking relating to using and creating different programs as well as understanding how digital systems work.
It is our school’s aim to equip children with the relevant skills and knowledge that is required to understand the three core areas of Computing:
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Digital Literacy
Implementation
At Stranton Primary School, computing is taught in a fortnightly block once every term on a rolling programme. We teach it in this way to deepen children’s understanding and allow for retention of knowledge and skills.
The National Curriculum provides the basis for the school progression documents and have been adapted to meet the context of our school. The progression documents are supplemented by additional resource banks, such as Purple Mash. The subject content for each concept are driven by the subject progression of skills documents. These have been written with the three core areas of Computing in mind:
- Computer Science – the understanding of coding and programming across a range of physical devices and digital resources.
- Information Technology – the range of skills required to operate and manipulate specific programs, systems, and content.
- Digital Literacy – the knowledge required to use technology safely and to evaluate and react to any potential risks of the online/digital world.
Impact
Learners at Stranton Primary School will receive a relevant, challenging and enjoyable computing curriculum whihc will meet the requirements of the national curriculum programmes of study for ICT and computing. Our children will use ICT and computing as a tool to enhance learning throughout the curriculum and will respond to new developments in technology and be equipped with the confidence and capability to use ICT and computing throughout their later life. Children at Stranton Primary School will develop an understanding of how to use ICT and computing safely and responsibly and will hopefully transition to secondary school with a keen interest in the continued learning of this subject.
